The test of leper, bald and blind

Ubqari Magazine - April 2016

The angel said, “Probably I know you, weren’t you suffering from leprosy because of which people used to hate you? Allah blessed you with all this due to the prayers of a poor man”. The leper said, “This wealth is inherited through generations”

There were three men in Bani Israel. One of them was leprous, second one was blind and the third one was bald. Allah wanted to test them so He sent an angel. The angel went to the leper and asked him that what did he like the most? The leprous said, “Good complexion and good skin because people hate me”. The angel turned its hand on him and (with Allah’s will) he recovered from his disease. He got fair complexion and beautiful skin. The angel asked him, “What kind of wealth would you like to have?” he said, “Camel”. The angel gave him a pregnant camel and said, “Allah will bless you with sustenance”. Then the angel went to the bald and asked him that what did he like the most? He replied, “I want thick fine hair so that I get rid of this imperfection because of which people don’t like me”. The angel turned its hand over his head and (with Allah’s will) he got rid of his imperfection. The angel asked him, “What kind of wealth would you like to have?” he said, “Cow”. The angel gave him a pregnant cow and said, “Allah will bless you with sustenance”. Then the angel went to the blind man and asked him that what did he like the most? He said, “I wish that Allah bless me with sight so that I can see the people”. The angel turned its hand over and Allah blessed him with sight. The angel asked him, “What kind of wealth would you like?” he said, “Goats”. The angel gave him a pregnant goat. Those three animals had offspring.  In a short period of time, they were so blessed that the leper’s valley was full of his camels, the bald’s valley was full of his cattle and the blind’s valley was full of his goats. The angel went back to the leper in the same form and said, “I am a poor man and I have finished all my belongings in my journey. I don’t expect anything accept from Allah but referring to Him, who blessed you with good color, skin and wealth I ask you to give me one camel so that I can fulfill my travel needs.” He said to the angel, “Many other people have rights on me; there is no room for you.” The angel said, “Probably I know you, weren’t you suffering from leprosy because of which people used to hate you? Allah blessed you with all this due to the prayers of a poor man”. The leper said, “This wealth is inherited through generations”. The angel said, “If you are lying, may Allah revert you to the same condition”. Then the angel went to the bald man and requested him the same. The bald man replied the same as the leper did. The angel reminded him of his baldness and that Allah blessed him with everything due to the prayer of a poor man. But he said everything he possessed belonged to his forefathers and had been passed to him from generation to generation. The angel said, “If you are lying, may Allah revert you to the same condition”. After this, the angel went to the blind man and said, “I am a poor man and I have finished all my belongings in my journey. I don’t expect anything accept from Allah but referring to Him, who blessed you with eyesight, I ask you for one goat so that I can fulfill my travel needs. He replied, “Yes I was blind and Allah blessed me with eyesight. I was poor but Allah blessed me with wealth. Take as many goats as you want how I can stop you as you are referring to Allah?” the angel said, “Keep your wealth as it was just a test. Allah is happy with you but He is angry with both of your friends. Dear kids! The leper and blind man told a lie because of which they remained unsuccessful in both the worlds (Allah reverted them to their previous condition). But the blind man was successful here and hereafter because of telling the truth. So we should be steady and determined while in trials and should not tell lies. We should help the poor, needy and helpless with the wealth that Allah has blessed us with. This pleases Allah and makes Him happy with us. Quran says, “Allah does not show the right path to extravagant and liars.” Hazrat Abdullah Bin Masud (رضی اللہ عنہ ) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said that, “Must be truthful verily, truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man may speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as truthful. Verily, falsehood leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man may tell lies until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”Selection: Sanwal Chughtai, Ranjhu Chughtai, Amman Zebu Chughtai and Bhural Chughtai, Ahemd Pur Sherqia)
